The Pirates and Reds are bitter rivals in the NL Central, and they came out guns blazing in last night’s Wild Card contest.
The Pirates, who haven’t have a winning season in over 20 years finally made an appearance in the postseason as the number one Wild Card berth in the National League. The Cincinnati Reds, who played the contest in Pittsburgh, could not hold on to the Bucs and are going home early in the month of October.
Pirate’s catcher Russell Martin made a big impact in the game, going 3-for-4 with two home runs. Marlon Byrd also joined in the fun with a home run and two RBIs. But the game couldn’t have been won without pitcher Francisco Liriano, who pitched seven innings of four hit ball, surrendering one run while striking out five.
The Pirates now move on to St. Louis to start the NLDS with the Cardinals, who sported the league’s best record. The five game series starts on Thursday the 4th at 5pm ET. It is another NL Central rivalry, and the series will undoubtedly be a fierce match up with lots of excitement.
